THE CONE OF THE SPINDLE: A PART NOT TO BE NEGLECTED

Find out what spindle cone maintenance involves and the benefits associated with it.

The taper of a spindle is a critical part that plays an essential role in machining materials. In fact, the latter ensures the maintenance and positioning of the tool holder as well as the tool in relation to the material being worked. Consequently, the condition of the cone directly impacts the level of precision and the progress of machining operations. This is why regular maintenance must be carried out!

What happens if the cone surface is damaged?! Several major problems can arise:

  • The contact surface between the tool and the tool holder will no longer be optimal. This will reduce machining precision.

  • The positioning of the tool holder will no longer be adequate. This could cause the CNC machine to stop.

  • The vibration level of the machining will be higher. Therefore, the durability of the spindle bearings will be greatly reduced.

  • Premature and frequent wear of the tool holder. Replacing it on a daily basis will result in increased costs.

All of these problems can be avoided if the cone is maintained and cleaned frequently.
What are the best practices to adopt?

  • Clean the surface of the cone and tool holder with a maintenance tool specially designed for them. How should you proceed? Insert the tool into the cone and turn it to simply clean the surface.

  • Ideally, this process should be performed as often as possible. Luckily, we have this product in stock! If you don't already have it, get it now at [email protected].

  • Check the condition of the cone surface with the blue test. All you have to do is place the liquid on the tool holder and insert it into the cone. Make sure to insert the tool holder correctly so that the liquid properly impregnates the surface of the cone. Next, remove the tool holder from the cone. Then inspect the surface of the tool holder and cone. If these are well impregnated with blue, the cone does not need to be ground. Otherwise, it must be rectified.

  • By inspecting and ensuring the cleanliness of the cone, you will have consistent machining precision. Thus, good positioning of the tool and the tool holder. Also, a low level of vibration of the bearings and a reduction in downtime. If you don't already have it, get it now at [email protected].
